WHY SPACE MATTERS
Know the space before the truck arrives.
Cubic footage connects your item list, the truck plan, and the written estimate.
An underquoted move can cost more when you have the least leverage.
If belongings are missing or the space is understated, the price can change after the move is underway, the truck can run out of room, or part of the shipment can be delayed. Compare the written cubic feet with a complete inventory before you sign, and get every correction in writing.
For an interstate household-goods move, the first and last steps are usually similar. The service and route in the middle depend on what your documents promise.
1
Step 1 of 6
Survey and written estimate
The mover reviews your belongings in person or by video, prices the shipment and selected services, and provides a written binding or non-binding estimate.
2
Step 2 of 6
Choose the service
Confirm packing, valuation protection, pickup and delivery dates, and whether the agreement reserves part of a vehicle or its exclusive use.
3
Step 3 of 6
Pack, label, and inventory
The crew protects furniture and packs the items included in your plan. Every carton and unboxed piece is recorded; check the listed condition before signing.
4
Step 4 of 6
Load and document
The bill of lading is the transportation contract. It identifies the mover, any participating carriers when known, the vehicle ID or IDs, pickup and delivery dates or periods, requested services, and charges.
5
Step 5 of 6
Travel by the written route
The service named in your documents determines whether your shipment has exclusive use of a vehicle or may share space with other customers.
Exclusive-use vehicle
Often called a dedicated truck
Where items go
Only your shipment rides in the mover's truck or trailer while exclusive-use service applies.
Often chosen for
Larger households or customers who want vehicle space isolated from other shipments.
Pros
No other customer's shipment shares that vehicle.
Tradeoffs
It may cost more. Direct delivery, one-vehicle or no-transfer handling, expedited service, and guaranteed dates are separate written promises.
Shared or consolidated service
Often called a shared load
Where items go
Your shipment may share vehicle space with other customers when exclusive use is not part of the agreement.
Often chosen for
Smaller shipments, flexible timing, and cost-conscious moves.
Pros
It may cost less than reserving exclusive use of a whole vehicle.
Tradeoffs
Ask about other stops, transfers, storage, carrier changes, and the written delivery period.
6
Step 6 of 6
Deliver and verify
Direct each item to the right room, check it against the inventory, and record anything missing or damaged before signing. Unpacking and reassembly happen only when included.

This mismatch does not prove intent or predict your final bill. It is a significant difference that should be explained and corrected in writing before you sign.

Why this result matters
Educational comparison based on the inventory you provided; actual volume, weight, and charges depend on the final shipment and services. Safebound makes no claim about any specific company.
How we calculate the comparison
Three words that decide your price
Binding — the price is guaranteed for the inventory and services listed. Not-to-exceed — it can go down, never up. Non-binding — it can grow; at delivery you owe at most 110% of the written estimate (49 CFR 375.407).
Sources and federal protections
Federal rules require movers to base your written estimate on a survey of your goods — waivable only in writing. A sight-unseen cubic-foot quote over the phone is the single most common setup for a move-day surprise.
The BBB logs roughly 13,000 mover complaints and negative reviews a year — and the FTC estimates fewer than 10% of victims ever report.BBB “Know Your Mover” study (2020)
Federal prosecutors have charged moving operators over “low binding estimates … inflated cubic footage” — one nationwide case counted 1,000+ victims and $2.4M+ in losses, ending in a 78-month sentence.DOJ: twelve charged ·
DOJ: 78-month sentence
Your federal backstop: on a non-binding interstate estimate, a mover must deliver your goods at no more than 110% of the written estimate.49 CFR 375.407 ·

Plain-English — how this free tool works and what happens to your information. Effective date: . By using the Space Check, you agree to these terms.
What this is
A free space-planning tool that estimates cubic footage from average item sizes. It is not a binding or non-binding moving estimate. A formal estimate requires a visual or video survey, and your Safebound account manager provides the actual price.
Your information
If you upload another company’s quote, we process its contents to build the comparison. A clean original PDF may be stored privately for up to 365 days so you can complete the workflow and authorized staff can investigate a document issue; pending or abandoned files expire sooner. Structured quote details (mover, route, prices, volumes, and confirmed items) may be kept for up to 24 months to operate and improve the comparison. We never sell this information.
Room photos and quote images or text are sent to Anthropic during analysis. Safebound does not archive room-photo or quote-image files in its own storage. Do not include sensitive information that is not needed for the inventory or quote check.
When you use Talk, your message and recent conversation context are sent to Anthropic. If you use Voice, the audio is sent to Groq for transcription and the transcript then follows the Talk path. AI output can be incomplete; contact a person for account, price, safety, or move-specific decisions.
Service providers: Netlify hosts the app, private document storage, and server functions; Neon stores structured quote, lead, and analytics records; Cloudflare provides bot protection; Resend sends requested email; and a private malware scanner checks PDFs before they can be retained.
Contact details are used only for the email or follow-up you request and may be kept for up to 24 months. After you accept these terms, limited first-party analytics record app routes and feature interactions with hashed network and session identifiers for up to 13 months. We honor browser Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals.

Estimates & ranges
Cubic-foot figures and any cost range shown are planning estimates using generous average sizes and may differ from a surveyed estimate. No price shown here is a quote.
Your rights
FMCSA lists Safebound as CARRIER/BROKER and authorizes it as a Motor Carrier of Household Goods (USDOT 2900155 · MC 975408). For a household move, ask your account manager to confirm in writing that Safebound is the performing carrier; specialized services such as auto transport may be brokered. Federal rules (49 CFR Part 375) protect your move, including the 110% rule that caps what you owe at delivery on a non-binding estimate.
